The evening was approaching on July 4th, 2026  and I didn’t feel like meeting up with friends and partying, I wanted to shoot photos of the fireworks in Bend (where I live).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI browsed around my brain for multiple locations to shoot from, all of them bored me, I wasn’t motivated. Then I thought, what about using the drone? I was skeptical because fireworks usually require a long exposure unless you want to crank your ISO, making the photos noisy and any long exposure needs to be held still or it becomes blurry...could a drone do that?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe forecast called for light to calm winds, giving me a better chance at keeping the drone stable, photos sharp. I felt good about trying the shot, if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work, at least I tried.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI set out on my ebike and had the picture in my head: Cascades in the background, Pilot Butte in the mid-ground, neighborhoods in the foreground, all the while the fireworks would be above Pilot Butte and the Cascades.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI found the spot to shoot from, nothing special, just a random curb with Pilot Butte about a half mile away. As the firework start time of 10pm drew near a person came walking up and asked if they could sit on the curb to watch the show. I obviously said no problem and told them I was going to fly my drone to shoot, but they wouldn’t notice after it left the ground (my new drone is very quiet). They didn’t care and said they had been watching the fireworks from this exact spot for six years...it was special to them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe time came to fly, I put the drone up directly above, had it climb into the sky, well below the legal limit :), tested a few exposures before the fireworks started and waited patiently for the fireworks...I was excited!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe fireworks started and I began shooting shots, I tried to time them as best I could, but never thought ‘I had that one shot so I could stop shooting,’ I kept shooting until the show was over...I had no idea if the shots worked. I don’t really trust what I see in the camera\/monitor, I trust what I see when I get home and see them on the computer.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI wanted to race home on the ebike to look at the photos, but the 4th is crazy with traffic, drinking and partying, so I took my time; at 50 years old I have changed my ways in trusting other drivers ;)\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI make it back home safe and sound, but not after witnessing firefighters block the road to put out fires on Pilot Butte (standard and sorta a loving tradition over the years), almost getting crushed by another biker coming the opposite way, dodging people having a good time partying all over the streets and the normal loving mayhem of the 4th.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI load the shots on the computer and instantly see they had worked!!! I was fired up to say the least!
